In today's fast-paced world of 8-to-5 jobs and food made while you wait, staying in shape is sometimes difficult. You should know, however, that balancing a successful career with a successful, healthy lifestyle can be achieved. If starting or ending your busy day with an hour-long workout session sounds impossible, don't worry. With a couple changes to your daily routine, you can fit exercise into your schedule.

Step 1

Take the stairs. Experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest increasing the amount of steps in your daily routine can moderately increase caloric burning. Parking at the end of the parking lot, or walking around the building at lunch will work as well. According to a study by the city of Cambridge, Mass., a 150-pound individual walking at a normal pace somewhere around 3 mph can burn as much as 40 calories in a half-mile walk. Walk at 4 mph, and you might burn 20 more calories.

Step 2

Pump it up because lifting weights can help you with your fitness goals. Experts at the Mayo Clinic suggest that a higher lean muscle-to-fat ratio helps to stimulate metabolism, one of the key factors in burning fat.

Step 3

Join into playtime with your children or pets. Instead of watching your children at the park, shoot baskets with them. Sustained movement even at the slowest pace has the ability to burn calories just like other faster-paced activities.

Tips and Warnings

  • Get a partner to join in helping you reach your weight-loss goals. Experts suggest partnering up adds the benefits of having someone to talk to and helping keep you determined. Keep a journal of daily activities so you can track your progress, and add additional activities as you get healthier.
  • Consult a physician before engaging in an exercise schedule. Take time stretching before exercise to prevent injury.
