The natural hormonal makeup of men means that most men are hairy on their face, chest and back. For men who do not like the look of hair on their bodies, or for men that must be clean-shaven for work, there are many options available to help remove hair in a safe and comfortable way.

Razors

The razor is a common piece of equipment for removing hair. Although the action of the razor is controlled by the blade that is used, today's market is filled with many options including blade size, number of blades, quality of blades and blades with built in lubrication strips. For those with little time to shave in the morning or regular problems with shaving bumps, electric razors are also available, although they do not provide as close of a shave as traditional razors.

Pre-Shave Products

The success of hair removal when using a razor is often influenced by the use of a pre-shave cream or oil product. Pre-shave products are designed to soften your hair shafts and reduce the amount of drag that is produced as you move the razor across your face. This helps provide a more comfortable shave with less irritation.

Shaving Creams and Gels

Other important hair removal products for men are shaving creams or gels. A high quality shaving cream or gel also reduces drag on the face and provides lubrication between the skin and the hair. This can further help with a comfortable and close shaving experience without irritation.

Wax

Men can also use waxing products to remove hair from their body. When waxing an adhesive is applied to the hair and a cloth or other material is laid over top the adhesive. The material is then pulled from the skin, ripping the hairs out of their follicles in the process. Although more painful than shaving, waxing removes the hair completely from the follicle rather than just shaving it at the surface, creating longer lasting results.

Depilatory

Chemical depilatory hair removers can also be used by men to remove hair in unwanted places. Depilatories use chemicals, such as calcium thioglycolate and calcium hydroxide to break down a substance that gives your hair its structure called keratin. Once the bonds of keratin have been broken down, you can wipe the hair off the skin with a cloth or spatula. With a growing number of men using depilatories, some brands, such as Nair, have released their own lines of depilatories specifically made for men.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser technology can also be used by men for more permanent hair removal, even on more sensitive areas such as the face and neck. Laser hair removal uses specially calibrated lasers that target hair follicles and destroy them with heat. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that you understand the possible side effects before using laser hair removal which can include pain, inflammation, redness, blistering, scarring and skin discoloration.
