Although doctors can offer a variety of treatment options for acne on the face, including retinoid creams, chemical peels and oral antibiotics, a less invasive approach is to treat breakouts at home. If home remedies are not successful, over-the-counter topical solutions, such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide products, work to unclog pores and reduce acne-causing bacteria found on the surface of the skin. While you're waiting for the treatments to work, you can hide blemishes with concealer and foundation.
Step 1
Wash the face with a mild cleansing agent. Cleansing the face twice a day reduces the amount of oil on the skin to remove oil and dead skin cells on the face. Avoid scrubbing at the skin or washing too frequently since this can irritate the face and worsen acne.
Step 2
Give yourself an oatmeal mask on a weekly basis. Oatmeal is effective at absorbing excess oil on the face and exfoliating dead skin cells, according to the GrannyMed website. Add ½ cup of boiling water to 1 cup of oatmeal and blend well. Add 1/4 cup of honey and mix in a clean bowl. Allow the mixture to cool, then spread the oatmeal over the face while avoiding the eyes. Leave the oatmeal in place for approximately 15 minutes before rinsing off with lukewarm water.
Step 3
Control the amount of iodine in your diet. According to MotherNature.com, too much iodine in the diet may cause an acne breakout. Foods high in iodine include beef liver, kelp, asparagus, turkey, chicken, cheddar cheese and salt.
