New York City is a metropolis full of fine dining, expensive department stores and luxurious spas. But who wants to spend money if they don’t have to? Finding deals while visiting NYC allows travelers to do more while in the city. Stretch your budget and stay active while in Manhattan. All prices are valid as of July 2010.

Physical Activities

Try out a new indoor cycling instructor at SoulCycle in the Upper West Side. Drop by for one of the Friday free classes. Enjoy Yoga in Central Park for free ($5 suggested donation) on Monday evenings. For even more variety in class options, the Shape Up NYC program offers several free aerobic classes at recreation centers throughout the city. Take a Tae Kwan Do or Zumba class, or learn some self-defense techniques.

Golfing

For golfers, cheap is a relative term. If you just can’t escape the lure of the links then head over to one of NYC’s many municipal golf courses. A permit is $6 (if you are staying with friends, have a NYC resident get a free permit). Choose to play just nine holes in either the early morning hours, or twilight hours for $18. Pass up the golf cart and walk the course for extra savings and more calories burned.

Bowling

While free bowling isn’t possible, NYC visitors can find bowling deals. The bowling lanes at Chelsea Piers are worth checking out. Bowl on a Tuesday night from 9 p.m. to midnight for just $28 per person. If that price is still too steep then Gil Hodges Lanes’ Nifty Fifty Special should sound good. Bowl at the Brooklyn bowling alley on Tuesdays or Thursdays midday for $6 cover and .50 per game.

Healthy Eats

Eating healthy without breaking the bank is possible, even in New York City. Dine at one of Manhattan's legendary noodle shops, or choose a vegetarian or Middle Eastern restaurant. The online magazine Lifestyler offers several healthy meal ideas under $5 for city visitors who'd like more time out exploring NYC, not sitting in a restaurant. For a dessert that won’t empty the bank account, order frozen yogurt for a light, healthy treat.

Municipal Parks

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation has parks in all five boroughs, so a location is near wherever you might be staying. Take advantage of the parks’ tennis or basketball courts, or hike through some of the miles of trails maintained by the city. Bike a greenway or swim in the ocean or pool, all within a NYC park.
