Tussionex is available approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for sale by prescription only in the United States. It is produced by UCB Manufacturing and is used for upper respiratory symptoms, especially in controlling coughs. Tussionex is for adults and children over the age of six. Tussionex contains narcotic ingredients which may be addictive if not taken exactly as prescribed. Do not take this medication unless it is given under the care and instructions of a doctor.

Hydrocodone Polistirex

A teaspoon of Tussionex contains a dose of hydrocone polistirex, which is the equivalent of a 10 mg dose of hydrocone bitartrate. Hydrocone is a narcotic which works on the central nervous system. It is an analgesic that can repress the respiratory system, especially the cough center. The chemical makeup of hydrocondone polistirex is Sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer complex with 4,5α-epoxy-3-methoxy-17-methylmorphinan-6-one.

Chlorpheniramine Polistirex

Within a 5 ml dose of Tussionex is chlorpheniramine polistirex equal to 8 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate.
Chlorpheniramine acts as an antihistamine, or H1 receptor antagonist. It works by preventing the release of histamine from the dilating capillaries. It also stops histamine from causing swelling within the respiratory mucosa. The chemical makeup of chlorpheniramine polistirex is sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer complex with 2-[p-chloro-α-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-benzyl]pyridine.

Inactive Ingredients

Tussionex also contains inactive ingredients which add to the taste, color and binding of the hydrocodone polistirex and chlorepheniramine polistirex, but do not change how they work. These inactive ingredients are: flavor, sucrose,
high fructose corn syrup, purified water, D&C yellow No. 10, FD&C yellow No. 6, xanthan gum. pregelatinized starch, ascorbic acid, ethylcellulose, methylparaben, polyethylene glycol 3350, polysorbate 80, propylene glycol, vegetable oil and propylparaben.
