In the past, crossbows functioned as military weapons, sometimes preferred over standard bows due to their point-and-shoot nature. Modern enthusiasts employ crossbows primarily for use in hunting or target shooting. These devices are composed of a bow assembly attached to a stock; some models feature components made of wood, others of metal and plastic. Crossbows are fairly straightforward to build, but you must take care to ensure that all the pieces are securely joined, due to the significant tension applied by the bowstrings.

Assembly

Step 1

Fit the cable saver onto the crossed cables; insert the top cable into the larger of the two notches on the saver, then fit the bottom cable into the smaller notch. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the top of the cable saver.

Step 2

Position the cable assembly next to the front of the crossbow stock; the bowstring should rest on the top of the stock. Insert the cable saver into the slot at the end of the flight groove on the crossbow stock.

Step 3

Align the location rod located at the end of the stock with the matching hole on the cable assembly; some models of crossbow may come with a cushion that fits between the cable assembly and the crossbow stock. Push the cable assembly onto the end of the stock and apply pressure until the assembly is properly seated.

Step 4

Fit a washer over the assembly bolt, then insert the assembly bolt through the cable assembly and into the end of the crossbow stock. Tighten the bolt until the pieces are securely joined; if your model of crossbow features an additional locking bolt located over the path of the assembly bolt, turn the locking bolt tight.

Step 5

Insert the tabbed ends of the foot stirrup into the corresponding holes on the crossbow riser. Check that the stirrup is aligned such that it will not interfere with the path of the arrow's flight, then tighten the screws on the riser to secure the stirrup in place.

Pin Sight Mounting

Step 1

Align the sight blade over the holes on the side of the barrel near the cable assembly; the blade should slant towards the cable assembly. Screw the side blade to the barrel.

Step 2

Remove the nut from the end of the pin sight, then slide the pin sight through the slot on the sight blade.

Step 3

Adjust the pin sight until it reaches the desired elevation. Replace the nut onto the end of the pin sight and tighten securely.

Tips and Warnings

  • Prepare a clean work area prior to assembly; perform an inspection of each piece as you work to check for any wear and tear. Check that all the connection points are properly secured before you attempt to use the crossbow.
