Reflexology foot treatment involves using pressure on the feet to bring about a change to the body, according to Barbara and Kevin Kunz, reflexology authorities. A reflexology chart provides a map of what part of the body is affected by specific locations on the feet and hands. The left or right sides of the feet and hands correspond to the same side of the body. If you have a health problem, consult your doctor. The Reflexology Research website claims that the practice is to be used in conjunction with medical care.
History
Reflexology originated in Egypt and China, according to the American Cancer Society website. In the early 1900s, American doctor William Fitzgerald, M.D. mapped parts of the body on the foot to assist with diagnosing and treating his patients. He called each of the 10 mapped areas "zones." Nurse and physiotherapist Eunice Ingham changed the name from "zone therapy" to "reflexology." Mildred Carter's book on reflexology in 1970 became a bestselling title for her publisher, bringing the practice to light with a million sales of her book.
Benefits
Reflexology proponents claim that the benefits of the practice come about by interrupting signals of stress and tension. According to the American Cancer Society website, reflexology is able to help some people by relaxing them, decreasing anxiety and stress, and reducing their pain. The Mayo Clinic claims that reflexology may help to reduce some of the anxiety during labor and childbirth. Other benefits touted by the Reflexology Research website include rejuvenation of tired feet, better blood flow and improved blood pressure and cholesterol.
Practice
There are courses on how to practice reflexology and get national certification with the American Reflexology Certification Board. If you plan to work on yourself, you can learn what you need to know by using charts and a book with instructions on how and where to apply the pressure.
Method
Before the reflexology treatment begins, the practitioner should ask questions before looking at your feet. Once he starts examining the feet, he may notice some tender areas as he applies pressure to reflex points. Foot reflexology treatment sessions generally last 30 minutes to an hour.
Complications
Reflexology shouldn't be used on everyone, according to the American Cancer Society website. If you are actively involved in cancer treatment or if you have swelling in the foot or leg, you should avoid it. Pressure should not be applied to any area where there is a tumor or lump. People with heart disease, arthritis or any other chronic condition should discuss additional treatments with their doctors.
