No matter who you are, you pass gas. In fact, most people produce between one and four pints per day and pass gas an average of 14 times daily, according to MedlinePlus. Though it is a normal body function, stomach gas, or flatulence, can be embarrassing and even painful. Home remedies can help relieve discomfort and minimize gas. Individuals with severe, chronic gas should talk to a doctor, as an underlying medical condition could be the cause.

Diet Changes

High-fiber foods are among the biggest offenders that cause gas, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are examples of high fiber selections that can create gas by causing bacteria in the colon to ferment undigested carbohydrates in the small intestine. You can start by cutting back on high fiber foods and incorporating them slowly back into the diet.

Gas also results when air creeps into the lower digestive tract. Drinking carbonated beverages and using a straw to sip them can cause this problem. Drinking lots of water in place of carbonated beverages and eating slowly helps too.

Exercise

Exercise can help remedy stomach gas in individuals with intestinal conditions that cause excess gas, explains the Mayo Clinic. Activities such as bicycling may help ease gas, adds the clinic.

Peppermint

Peppermint, a flowering plant cultivated for its fragrant oils and medicinal value, has been used to relieve a variety of ailments, such as colds, nausea, headache and indigestion. According to the Mayo Clinic, people with stomach and intestinal disorders often find relief from gas and cramping by sipping peppermint tea, which has an antispasmodic effect on the digestive tract due to menthol, a constituent in peppermint.

MedlinePlus reports that peppermint is generally safe for healthy, nonpregnant and non-allergic adults; however, the Mayo Clinic states that peppermint can may cause heartburn and acid reflux in some people.
