The best way to experience New York City is on foot, and the holidays are no exception. Warm clothing and great walking shoes are a must to enjoy this spectacular city. New York offers the fitness-minded traveler many opportunities to stay active simply by wandering around the city and take in the sights! Fortunately for the budget-conscious traveler, many of the delights New York has to offer are completely free.

Holiday Window Displays

New York City department store holiday windows are legendary, ranging from whimsical to avant garde to traditional displays. Start at Macy's at Herald Square and make your way up to Barney's at Madison Avenue and 61st Street and you'll cover over 30 city blocks on foot, taking in window sights at Saks, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdale's, Lord and Taylor and Henri Bendel along the way.

Holiday Trees

The diversity of New York City is reflected in the variety of holiday trees around town. From the Cathedral of St. John the Divine's huge Peace Tree decorated with 1,000 origami cranes to the more traditional trees at Rockefeller and Lincoln Centers and South Street Seaport, you'll enjoy picking your favorite. Stroll 49 blocks of Park Avenue between 97th street and 48th streets to delight in the cherry and hawthorne trees that are lit to celebrate Hanukkah. Lighting ceremonies are free to attend. See resources section for specific dates and times.

Caroling

Who can resist singing "Silent Night" in the city that never sleeps? Instead of heading to a restaurant to fill up on rich holiday fare, flex your vocal chords and spend Christmas Eve caroling at Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. Songbooks are provided at no charge.

Ice Skating

The holiday season in New York is simply not complete without ice skating. Bryant Park has a free ice rink that is twice the size of the Rockefeller Center rink! Sure, there's a fee to rent skates, but this is still a steal. Quick snacks available in the snack bar.

Central Park New Year's Eve Run

The New York Road Runners organizes a midnight run every New Year's Eve at midnight through Central Park. Cheering on the runners is free, or pay the registration fee and you can join in and run the 4-mile race yourself. Fireworks and a costume contest accompanying the race make this a festive event!

Christmas in Little Italy

Mulberry Street, the heart of Little Italy, is a magical destination over the holidays. Festive lights and decorations complement the carolers, parades and extravagant religious processions between Canal and Broome Streets.
