If you enjoy using a bicycle for transportation but have difficulty finding a place to store the device when not in use, a folding bicycle may provide the ideal solution. These devices are similar in appearance to standard bicycles; however, the bicycle frame is comprised of two halves joined together with a hinge. Various locking levers hold each element of the bicycle securely in position yet may be opened and closed by hand, eliminating the need for any special tools.
Folding
Step 1
Stand to the side of the bicycle where the chain is located. If applicable, set the front brake to the “open” position.
Step 2
Lift the levers securing the seat and handlebars in place. Set the seat and handlebars to the lowest position and then return the levers to their original position.
Step 3
Lift the lever attached to the hinged portion of the handlebar post. Lower the upper portion of the post and then return the lever to its original position.
Step 4
Lift the lever locking the two halves of the frame together. Swing the front half of the frame to the side until it makes contact with the rear half of the frame; if necessary, turn the handlebars so that they fit between the two wheels. Lower the lever back into position.
Unfolding
Step 1
Stand to the side of the bicycle where the chain is located. Lift the lever located on top of the frame. Swing the front end of the frame outwards until the bicycle is completely unfolded. Push down on the lever to lock the frame in place.
Step 2
Lift the lever securing the handlebar post in place. Lift the handlebar post upwards until it reaches the proper position. Push down on the lever to lock the handlebar post in place.
Step 3
Lift the levers securing the seat and handlebars in place. Lift the seat and handlebars upwards until each reaches a comfortable position. Push down on the levers to lock the seat and handlebars in place.
Tips and Warnings
- Some models of folding bicycle feature a detachable wheel held in place with a locking lever. When the lever is in the unlocked position, you are free to remove or install the wheel as desired. If the levers feel loose when you lock them in place, you may need to adjust them. Locate the nut on the opposite side of the lever. Lift the lever to the unlocked position and then tighten the nut a quarter of a turn; test the feel of the lever and make further adjustments if necessary.
- Check that all the levers are properly secured and that all parts are stable prior to riding your folding bicycle.
