Acid reflux--also called gastroesophageal reflux disease--is a common condition caused by a malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter. In some cases, the sphincter does not close properly. In others, it opens spontaneously. The result of the malfunction is that the contents of the stomach--both acids and food--are able to reflux back up the esophagus, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse.
The most common symptom of acid reflux is heartburn, which is characterized by a burning pain in the chest that is often felt after eating or while lying down. However, some people also experience a cough or other respiratory conditions when they have acid reflux.
Chronic Cough
When a cough is a symptom of acid reflux, it is typically a chronic, dry cough that is not related to an infection or a medical condition. Children younger than 12 are more likely to develop a cough as a sign of acid reflux, according to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. People who develop a cough are less likely to experience frequent heartburn as a sign of the condition.
Asthma
Another respiratory symptom of acid reflux is asthma or a worsening of asthma symptoms, according to the New York University Langone Medical Center. Asthma symptoms often include wheezing and shortness of breath. It may also be accompanied by a cough.
Hoarseness
Acid reflux can also cause voice hoarseness, according to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University. The hoarseness can be caused by respiratory symptoms such as a cough or it may be because of the acid that refluxes up the throat in people with GERD. Some people also develop a sore throat or have difficulty swallowing.
Other Symptoms
Other symptoms of acid reflux include difficulty swallowing, bad breath, excessive salivation and spitting up, especially at night, according to the Hershey Medical Center. However, these symptoms can also be caused by other medical conditions. If you have any symptoms of acid reflux, report them to your medical practitioner for evaluation.
