Healthy Protein Snacks

Advances in nutritional science continue to demonstrate the importance of optimum nutrition on overall health and well-being at every stage of life. The amino acids that make up protein, as explained by the Centers for Disease Control, serve as “the building blocks” of our bodies. Essential to healing, health, and even cognitive function, protein plays a significant role in many functions of the body and mind. Healthy protein snacks are a great way to ensure that the body is getting the nutrients it needs.

Hummus

Made of pureed chickpeas, spices and a squeeze of lemon or lime, hummus is a versatile, healthy protein snack. Inexpensive to make at home, hummus can be used as a sandwich filling, either on its own or with roasted vegetables, such as red peppers and portabella mushrooms. It is also used as a dip for whole grain pitas, bread, crackers or vegetables. In addition to protein, hummus offers potassium, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C.

Nuts

Nuts, as noted by the Harvard School of Public Health, are an “excellent” source of protein. However, that’s not all nuts have to offer. Citing assorted nutritional studies and the information from the FDA, the Harvard School of Public Health also said that eating an ounce of nuts a day, instead of a less nutritious snack or equal caloric value, can help reduce the risk of “sudden cardiac death” and heart disease. Those benefits are thought to come from the amino acid arginine and Omega-3 fatty acids. Other beneficial nutrients found in nuts include vitamin E, potassium and folic acid. Traditionally made with nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, trail mix can be a healthy way to enjoy nuts and gain extra nutritional benefits. Choose a mix made without nutritionally empty candy additions, one with a good blend of nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, including pineapple, raisins, and cranberries. In addition to the protein, a well-chosen trail mix will offer vitamin E, vitamin C, some B vitamins, and assorted valuable micronutrients.

Yogurt

Low-fat yogurt offers protein and is a good source of calcium. Convenient as a take-along, refreshing on hot days, and a great dip for sliced fresh fruit, yogurt is a healthy snack choice. A sprinkle of wheat germ, granola or chopped nuts can add even more of a protein and nutrition burst. Yogurt, fresh fruit and a handful of ice cubes spun smooth in a blender is a great way to enjoy the nutritional benefits of these foods on the go and through a straw.
