Although you may think your vacation is ruined on a rainy day in New York City, the large city offers a number of activities for you and your family to enjoy. Looking beyond the obvious New York attractions, there is a variety of safe and active ways to spend a rainy afternoon in the city.

Pools

On a hot, summer afternoon or a rainy fall day, New York City has a number of indoor pools to spend an afternoon relaxing in. The Asphalt Green Aqua Center has one of the biggest pools in the city, with lanes for swimming or open areas for kids to play. Passes can be bought by the day or week.

Dining

Enjoy a quiet meal at one of New York City’s vegan restaurants. HanGawi is one of the most popular vegan restaurants in the city, along with the Loving Hut. Bonobo's Annex is a popular raw restaurant in the heart of New York City.

Museums

A rainy afternoon can be spent perusing one of the many museums across New York City. Feed your imagination with art at the Museum of Modern Art or learn the way electricity works at the New York Hall of Science.

Rock Climbing

Test out your strength and endurance on a rainy afternoon at an indoor rock-climbing facility. The Powerplay Recreation Center has a couple of climbing walls that are over 70 feet tall.

Sports

At Chelsea Piers, not only can you swim laps or splash around in the indoor pool, but you can play a number of different sports. Chelsea Piers offers indoor volleyball courts as well as racquet ball and basketball courts.
