Physical exhaustion, often referred to as extreme fatigue, occurs when the body has been put under stress by factors such as illness, lack of sleep, strenuous physical exercise or prolonged exposure to heat, also known as heat exhaustion. The signs and symptoms of physical exhaustion may vary from person to person or from one incident of exhaustion to another. It is important to recognize the signs of physical exhaustion so that you can properly treat yourself or know when to seek medical assistance.
Low Motivation and Drowsiness
Physical exhaustion may affect your mental capabilities and stability. You may become less able to focus or to motivate yourself to accomplish tasks both at home and on the job. You also may feel drowsy during the day and feel as though you are in need of a nap by early to mid-afternoon.
Heart Rate
Extreme physical exhaustion, particularly that which is triggered by heat, may be accompanied by a weak, but rapid heart rate. Strenuous physical activity or exposure to hot temperatures may cause the heart to struggle to supply blood to the body, while the strength of the pulse itself weakens. As the heart struggles to supply oxygen to the rest of the body, it may continue to beat at an elevated rate after the activity or heat exposure has ended.
Dizziness and Confusion
Physical exhaustion may lead to confusion and dizziness. You may forget what you were doing, where you were going or where you presently are. This confusion may or may not be accompanied by dizziness or the feeling that you may faint. Dizziness occurs due to a lack of oxygen being delivered to the brain through the bloodstream. A rapid, weak heart rate exacerbates this condition.
Sleep Inconsistencies
Extreme physical exhaustion can affect your sleep patterns. Although it seems logical that a person who is extremely fatigued may be able to sleep more soundly, the body does not always react in this way. You may become more restless at night and find it more difficult to sustain a deep sleep pattern. This can lead to further exhaustion. Those with chronic fatigue syndrome may feel unrefreshed upon waking up and maintain a feeling of malaise throughout the day.
Physical Pain and Discomfort
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a condition involving persistent and ongoing tiredness, weariness or exhaustion, presents itself through symptoms of physical pain and discomfort. You may have headaches, joint pain, lymph node tenderness, muscle aches or a chronic sore throat. Any of these symptoms that persist for more than two weeks should be evaluated by a physician.
