According to the Skin Care Physicians, the purple spots left behind by acne are not scars. These purple spots are actually a form of hyperpigmentation that is a natural part of the skin’s healing process from inflammation. Left untreated, these spots will eventually heal over time though that can take up to a year or more. Some home remedies will help speed up the fading of these purple acne spots.
Avoid the Sun
The sun can deepen hyperpigmentation of the skin, causing them to take even more time to heal. When going out into the sun, wear protective clothing and a hat to shade the face. Try to keep out of the sun when it is at its strongest, between the hours of 10:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m. Many of the treatments for these purple acne spots also make the skin photosensitive.
Lemon
Lemon juice contains natural bleaching properties that can be used to fade purple acne scars. Squeeze the juice from a fresh lemon. Dip a cotton ball into the juice and apply directly to the spot, leaving on 10 minutes before rinsing. Lemon juice is a treatment that makes the skin photosensitive.
Baking Soda
Treat yourself to a home microdermabrasion using baking soda. According to the American Chronicle, baking soda is even used in many cosmetic microdermabrasion treatments. Microdermabrasion works by scraping away the top layers of skin to reveal new skin underneath and layer by layer slowly work away the purple acne spot. To use, mix one part baking soda with two parts water and then gently rub the mixture into the acne spot for one minute. Rinse with cool water and pat the skin dry.
Aloe
According to Natural-Home Remedies, aloe vera is a great home remedy to fade purple acne scars. It can be applied directly from an aloe plant or in the form of a soap or gel. To use the plant directly, break off an aloe leaf. Take the leaf and squeeze the juice from its core or slice one side of the leaf to reveal the aloe juice within. The aloe juice from the plant can be applied directly onto the skin.
Pineapple
Puree fresh pineapple into a mush. Apply the puree over acne-prone skin and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse. According to the American Chronicle, pineapple contains high concentrations of vitamin C that helps build collagen, and the acidity provides a gentle exfoliation. The ascorbic acid will brighten the skin and help fade acne marks.
