A fly ball in baseball or softball occurs when a batter hits the ball in a high arcing path to one of the players in the field. A fly ball often demands a quick response from one of the fielders to catch the ball for an out. The proper technique to catch a fly ball requires a consideration of strategy before the play and good mechanics during the play. Constant attention on the ball itself, coupled with fast reflexes, the correct position and the proper form all help to make you more successful at fielding a fly ball.
Step 1
Consider where to throw the ball if it is hit to you. Thinking ahead of time allows you to make the most strategic play in the event you receive the ball. Prepare yourself for a potential catch by watching both the pitch itself and the batter. Observe how the batter is positioned and holding the bat to determine if a fly ball will come your way and what direction it may take.
Step 2
Watch the ball, once hit, to determine its trajectory. As the ball reaches its peak, call the ball to let other players know you will catch the ball. Calling out helps prevent collisions of running players. Listen for instructions shouted from fellow players who may have a better view of where the ball is going. If the ball is in the sun, shield your eyes with your glove to follow the ball.
Step 3
Determine where you think the ball will land and run hard to that location in an outside arc. Keep your eyes on the ball at all times. As the ball falls, adjust your position to meet the end of its trajectory.
Step 4
Position yourself so that you are behind where the ball will land. If need be, move forward to meet the ball. Follow the ball constantly as it drops toward you and reposition yourself accordingly.
Step 5
Raise your glove above your head with the palm open and facing the falling ball, preferably toward your throwing shoulder. Position your other hand next to the thumb of the glove to assist you to both catch the ball and close the glove securely to prevent the ball from falling out of the glove.
Step 6
Watch the ball over the top of the web between the thumb and forefinger of the glove. If the ball is in the sun, look under your glove using it as a shield against the light. Follow the ball with your eyes all the way into your glove. Allow the ball to fall squarely into the web and immediately close the glove with both your glove hand and freehand.
Step 7
Position yourself for your handoff throw. Open your glove and transfer the ball to your free hand and make your throw.
