Walking with exercise or trekking poles is also known as Nordic walking. It has several benefits, according to walking fitness experts Suzanne Nottingham and Alexandra Jurasin. This includes greater full body fitness and reduced joint impact thanks to the support from the poles. Nordic walking expert Malin Svensson reports that choosing the best pole is largely a "matter of personal preference." However, walking experts have identified several poles that are the best in terms of sturdy construction, light weight and other features.
Life-Link Guide Ultra Light
The editors of "Backpacker" magazine identify Life-Link's poles as one of the best all-purpose exercise poles, whether you want to hike or simply walk. They praise its hybrid construction that combines stability with minimal weight thanks to an aluminum top and a carbon fiber bottom. It's collapsible and you can attach it to various extensions, making it appropriate even for walking or hiking in the snow.
Leki Thermolite Aergon XL Speedlock
Leki's poles come recommended by Jayah Faye Paley, a professional Nordic walking trainer. The poles are heat-treated to ensure durability while keeping the weight at a minimum. Ergonomic grips help ensure a comfortable, blister-free grip on the poles, while straps help secure them should you engage in a more strenuous walk and not want to lose them accidentally. Paley says the poles are best if you're 5.5 feet tall or shorter.
Life-Link Variant Approach
Life-Link's Variant product wins top praise from GearReview.com, which likes its easy-to-adjust height. Life-Link constructs them from tempered steel for extra strength. You can used it for both standard walking and even skiing. Importantly, its rubber grips adjust to six different angles to help keep your hands and wrists comfortable and safe.
Black Diamond Contour Carbon Flicklock
The editors of "Backpacker" magazine love Black Diamond's carbon poles, saying they felt strong like aluminum while having the flexibility and swing of an ultralight or carbon fiber pole. If you sweat a lot while walking, you'll appreciate the foam grips that help wick away moisture unlike solid or rubber grips. The poles also extend to a length of 55 inches, making them prime for even tall walkers.

Trekking Poles are NOT Nordic Walking Poles. They are different poles, different techniques and used on different terrain.
