Feminine itching is a common compliant that causes women to see their gynecologist. A pelvic examination is necessary to properly diagnose the cause of such symptoms. Vaginal cells may be placed on a slide and examined under a microscope to determine if there is any yeast or bacteria present. A urine or blood test may also be preformed as a part of the examination. There are several causes of feminine itching that women should be aware of. Any woman who experiences persistent feminine itching should be seen by her physician.

Chemical Irritants

Certain chemical irritants may cause feminine itching. According to MedlinePlus, detergents, fabric softeners, feminine sprays, ointments, creams, douches and contraceptive foams or jellies may cause these symptoms. Some women may develop itching and irritation following sexual intercourse if they are sensitive to the spermicide present in condoms. If chemical irritants are to blame discontinuing use of the offending product will cause feminine itching to subside.

Infection

Feminine itching may be a symptom of a vaginal infection. Bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis also known as yeast; trichomoniasis, gonorrhea or chlamydia can all cause feminine itching. According to Merck.com, a white, gray, or cloudy discharge with a fishy odor may be caused by bacterial vaginosis while a thick, white, discharge often accompanied by itching, is typically caused by candidiasis, a yeast infection.

Trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia are infections that are spread through sexual contact with an infected partner. These infections can cause feminine itching and discomfort. Amy woman who has had unprotected intercourse should consider being tested for these infections. If left untreated, sexually transmitted infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which may lead to permanent infertility.

Menopause

Women nearing or already in menopause may experience feminine itching. Once the body reaches menopause the alterations in hormones can cause vaginal dryness which may lead to feminine itching. A lack of natural vaginal lubrication can make sexual intercourse uncomfortable and lead to discomfort. Women who experience these symptoms should consult their gynecologist. There are several ways to treat these symptoms, such as with over-the-counter natural lubricants or hormonal replacement therapy.
