A well-coiffed pubic region might make you feel better about your appearance in a swimsuit, but less physically comfortable due to ingrown hairs. According to MayoClinic.com, ingrown hairs happen when you remove or trim a hair and it grows inward, into your skin. It's more common in people with curly hair, but can happen to anyone. It's never sexy to see inflamed, irritated skin the pubic area, so you'll want to avoid this painful condition as best you can by following a few simple hair removal tips.

Step 1

Trim away long portions of hair with sharp scissors or an electric trimmer. Hair is easier to remove when it's shorter, which means hair removal is also easier on your skin.

Step 2

Soak in a warm bath for at least 5 minutes to soften the coarse and curly hair of your public region according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. Softened hairs are less sharp and less likely to coil into your skin.

Step 3

Exfoliate your public region before hair removal, recommends "Cosmopolitan." Use a loofah, washcloth or exfoliating scrub as it helps prevent ingrown hairs and releases hairs already starting to grow inward.

Step 4

Apply a lubricating oil to the area, like a pre-shave lotion or baby oil. This serves a dual purpose. It further softens your hair and it's less easily washed away by water than shave cream and offers a more reliable layer of protection from friction.

Step 5

Apply your regular shaving cream on top of your shave oil. Avoid soaps, shampoos or conditioners as shaving agents. Use a thick, heavy lathering product designed for shaving.

Step 6

Pull skin taut and pass over each area one time with a new, sharp razor. Shave in the direction of hair growth, according to the Palto Alto Medical Foundation. Avoid making multiple passes over the same area as this irritates skin and leads to ingrown hairs.

Step 7

Wash and pat dry, then apply a moisturizing skin cream that contains salicylic or glycolic acid, according to "Cosmopolitan." This will help prevent ingrown hairs, but also irritation, pimples and razor burn.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • New razor
  • Shave oil or baby oil
  • Shaving cream
