When practiced correctly, natural family planning is 99 percent effective—just as effective as artificial contraceptives. Natural family planning allows a woman to read her body's natural signals to determine when she is fertile and infertile. By correctly interpreting these signs, a woman can try to become pregnant or avoid pregnancy. Unlike the use of artificial contraceptives, natural family planning is inexpensive, with no monthly cost, and does not require any special preparation before sex.

Recognize Fertility Signs

Step 1

To be fully effective, you must understand the science behind natural family planning. A good reference book or course is the best way to learn the in-depth details you will need to practice natural family planning.

Step 2

Begin a new chart on the first day of your menstrual period. Fill in the date and the number of days in your previous cycle.

Step 3

Take your waking temperature at the same time every morning. Always do it before brushing your teeth or drinking your morning coffee or tea. Record your temperature on the chart.

Step 4

At various times throughout the day, observe physical fertility signs, including cervical mucus. Record your observations on your chart.

Analyze Your Chart

Step 1

Refer to your handbook on natural family planning for detailed instructions on analyzing your chart.

Step 2

You will notice an elevation of your basal body temperature just after you ovulate. A 0.2-degree elevation is usually a good sign that you are out of the fertile phase of your cycle.

Step 3

Cross-check your temperature sign with observations of physical signs, such as cervical mucus. You will notice that the amount of cervical mucus increases and that it becomes clear and stretchy before and during ovulation.

Step 4

Keep your old charts, as they give you valuable historical information about your body's normal cycles. If you notice changes in your cycle, your Ob/Gyn physician will find the information helpful in helping determine any problems.

Tips and Warnings

  • There are several charting programs available for PCs, PDAs and smart phones.
  • Do not attempt natural family planning without understanding your fertility signs. Failure to make accurate observations can result in unplanned pregnancy.
