Sweat is a natural response to a rise in body temperature due to hot weather, exercise and nervousness. Unfortunately, an odor often accompanies sweat. Underarm odor occurs when fatty sweat is excreted from the apocrine glands located in the armpits. The bacterial breakdown of this sweat typically results in an odor, but it can be effectively managed from home.

Bathe Often

According to the Discovery Health website, frequent bathing is an important tool in the fight against underarm odor--especially after vigorous exercise or exposure to hot weather. This is because baths or showers destroy the bacteria that feed on the sweat located in the armpits. Because underarm hair is a breeding ground for bacteria, you may choose to remove it while bathing. In addition, consider using an antibacterial soap several times a day. After bathing, dry off with freshly laundered towels and dress in clean, breathable clothing. Bacteria can breed in damp or unclean towels and clothing.

Relaxation

The Mayo Clinic says stress can trigger perspiration, making underarm odor more noticeable. Combat stress with something that relaxes you. Consider hypnosis, exercise, listening to your favorite music or learning tai chi or yoga. Or try a muscle relaxation technique. Start by tensing the muscles of your toes for approximately five seconds, and then relax them for 30 seconds. Move up your body, focusing on tensing and un-tensing each muscle group. Gradually work your way up your neck and then to your head.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel derives from a small tree or shrub native to east North America. It has been used for years to treat a variety of skin ailments. In fact, it was often used as a home remedy by the early American settlers and Native Americans. Witch hazel also has astringent qualities that help fight underarm odor. It works by causing the glands and tissues to contract, reducing sweat production. It also contains rubbing alcohol, helping to dry up sweat and odor causing bacteria. Witch hazel has a natural scent that helps tame and cover any armpit odor.
