Cleaning the lenses on your eyeglasses is not difficult, but it is essential. Dirt that builds up on the surface of the glass will not only obscure vision but may scratch the lens. In addition to dust, lenses accumulate oil from skin and finger smudges that make it hard to see clearly. Many eyeglass stores sell products designed to clean lenses effectively and quickly, but the at-home approach takes little time or money.

Step 1

Turn on the tap and let the water run until warm.

Step 2

Hold the glasses under the water. Let the running water hit both sides of the lenses.

Step 3

Apply one or two drops of mild liquid hand soap to your fingertips. Wipe down the lenses on both sides with your soapy fingers. According to EyeDoctorGuide.com, this will help break up oils deposited on the lens from your skin.

Step 4

Rinse the lenses again under running water to remove the soap residue. Hold the glasses up to eye level and look through the lenses. If necessary, repeat the process to remove all smudges.

Step 5

Wipe the glasses down with a lint-free, soft cloth. Dry both the lenses and the frame.

Tips and Warnings

  • For touch smudges, add a couple drops of white vinegar to each lens and wipe with a clean, soft cloth. Make it part of your daily routine to clean the eyeglass lenses and check the frame screws. This will extend the life of your glasses.
  • Ammonia-based cleaners, such as window cleaner, may discolor lenses.
