Shaving your armpits might sound like an easy task, but if it's done incorrectly, the effects can be embarrassing and painful. Razor bumps, razor burn, cuts and ingrown hairs can make you regret ever picking up that razor. The skin of your armpits is thin and sensitive and requires special treatment before, during and after shaving to prevent these types of problems from occurring. Fortunately, there is more than one way to shave your armpits, so if one does not work, simply try another.
Wet Shave
Step 1
Open your pores and soften armpit hairs with warm water. Hair Removal recommends saving armpit shaving for the shower or bath to reduce the chance of shaving a “too dry” armpit. If shaving in the shower, wait until just before you get out. If shaving in the bathtub, first soak for five to 10 minutes.
Step 2
Spray a small amount of shaving cream or gel onto your fingers, apply it to your armpit and work it into a lather.
Step 3
Raise your arm above your head, and gently slide the razor down your armpit from top to bottom. Repeat this procedure, rinsing the razor after each swipe, until you remove all the shaving cream. Unless you have extremely sensitive skin, reapply shaving cream and repeat, this time shaving in the opposite direction, from bottom to top for a closer shave.
Step 4
Dry your underarm by patting it dry with a soft cloth, and apply an after-shave moisturizer. To prevent soreness and the possibility of developing a rash, do not rub your freshly shaved armpit.
Step 5
Repeat this procedure on your other armpit.
Waxing
Step 1
Wash your armpit area with soap and warm water to open pores and soften armpit hairs, making removal easier.
Step 2
Fill a bowl with ice cubes. Stripping wax strips from your armpits can be painful, but immediately applying ice to the area can help dull the pain.
Step 3
Inspect your armpit area to determine the hair growth pattern. Underarm hairs tend to grow in varying directions, and waxing is easier if you follow the growth pattern. ManageMyLife recommends following the hair growth pattern even if it means waxing a small section at a time.
Step 4
Heat the wax, apply it to your armpit following the hair growth pattern, apply the fabric strip, and pull in the opposite direction. Repeat this process until you finish.
Step 5
Apply an after-shave moisturizer to your freshly waxed armpits.
