Heartburn occurs when stomach acid comes back up your esophagus. In severe cases, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, the sphincter muscle at the base of the esophagus does not close properly. Many things can trigger heartburn, such as spicy foods, pregnancy and alcohol. In addition, symptoms can worsen when you are lying down. Fortunately, there are several ways severe heartburn can be treated.

Antacids

The American Academy of Family Physicians explains that antacids can help tame severe heartburn. They work by neutralizing the acid your stomach produces. Many are quick-acting and can be purchased at almost any drugstore or grocery store. These medications can be used separately or combined. Although effective, antacids are only a temporary fix, as repeated doses are often necessary. According to the AAFP, side effects are generally mild and may include nausea, diarrhea, headaches or constipation. Most symptoms disappear on their own.

Losing Weight

According to the Mayo Clinic, keeping excess weight off can help remedy heartburn. This is because extra pounds place pressure on the abdomen and stomach, forcing acid back up into the esophagus. If you are already at a healthy weight, strive to maintain it. If you are obese or overweight, concentrate on losing those extra pounds through exercise and a nutritious diet. Aim for 1 to 2 pounds a week. Consult a doctor if you are having difficulty or need help creating a weight-loss program.

H2 Blockers

The AAFP notes that H2-receptor blockers can help treat severe heartburn symptoms. These types of medications work by decreasing the body’s production of stomach acid. They can be purchased over the counter and in prescription-strength formulas. H2-receptor blockers are not as fast-acting as antacids; it can take approximately an hour before results are noticed. However, they are often more effective and longer-lasting. Common examples include ranitidine and famotidine.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors not only neutralize acid production, but they give the esophagus enough time to heal, explains the Mayo Clinic. The PPIs omeprazole, or Prilosec OTC; lansoprazole, or Prevacid 24HR; and omeprazole/sodium bicarbonate, or Zegerid OTC, can be purchased over the counter, according to a report published by ConsumerReportsHealth.org. Prescription-strength PPIs are also offered. They are commonly used when H2-receptor blocker and antacids fail to treat heartburn symptoms. Relief of symptoms can take longer than other heartburn medications, but results are long-lasting, states the report.
