Deep conditioning hair is one way to moisturize damage strands to reduce frizz. Using oil, such as pure, virgin coconut oil, may add further shine and luster, as well as a nice fragrance. The Polynesian Cultural Center states that coconut oil is commonly used as a beauty treatment. Adding coconut oil to your care routine takes just a couple of hours and may improve the look and style of your hair.

Step 1

Heat 1 cup of water to boiling and pour into a large bowl. This will serve as a water bath to melt the oil.

Step 2

Set the container of coconut oil into the bowl of hot water, and let the oil liquefy. Harvest Bay suggests most hair will use 1 tbsp. of liquid oil. Longer hair may require more.

Step 3

Dip your fingers into the liquid oil. Massage the oil into your scalp. Move fingers down your hair to coat the shafts. Hair may be either dry or damp when applying oil.

Step 4

Place a plastic shower cap or plastic bag over your head to cover hair. Heat a towel in the clothes dryer, and wrap the warm towel around the plastic. Let the oil sit on hair and scalp for 30 minutes to one hour.

Step 5

Shampoo your hair to remove the coconut oil. This may require more than one shampooing. Condition and style your hair normally.

Step 6

Repeat in one a week if you shampoo often. For normal healthy hair, use coconut oil as needed.

Tips and Warnings

  • For added conditioning, add a tiny amount of oil to your hair before using a hair dryer. Place a dot of the condensed oil in the palm of your hand and rub your hands together. Run hands through your hair to spread the oil. Do not apply too much, or your hair will appear flat.
