About Liquid Diets

Liquid diets have risen in popularity since the late 1970s, and according to an article published by Vanderbilt University, billions of dollars may be spent on medically sponsored liquid diets or liquid diet products sold over-the counter. Low calorie liquid diets are not intended for long periods of time, while meal replacement shakes and powders can be used with foods and may substitute one or more daily meals.

Function

Liquid diets are widely used for weight loss and to improve health or reduce the risks of certain conditions. Weight loss resulting from liquid diets can improve the appearance and reduce the risks of high blood pressure and heart disease, according the Vanderbilt University article. Liquid diets can also be given by prescription to certain patients before and after surgery or people who are unable to consume solid foods (such as hospitalized patients).

Definition

A clear liquid diet consists of plain water, fruit juices without pulp, broth (such as consommé or bouillon), gelatin, soda, Popsicles and coffee or tea without milk or cream. Other liquid diets that are intended for weight loss, including Optifast and Medifast, consist of shakes, soups and other liquids that contain vitamins, minerals and protein. Juice diets can be beneficial when incorporating vegetable and fruit juices and are typically used for detoxing.

Theories/Speculation

The goal of detox diets is to remove toxins from the body with a simple diet that may contain liquids and certain raw vegetables. A detox diet can last from seven to 10 days and, according to the Mayo Clinic, the theory behind such diets is that certain foods such as meat, sugar, dairy, grains and caffeine can accumulate in the body and cause headaches, nausea, fatigue and in some cases, disease. There is no evidence, however, supporting those claims, the Mayo Clinic says.

Other Types

Another popular liquid diet offers supplemental liquids that are highly caloric.These formulas are typically sold in health food stores and are available in a powdered form that requires milk or water to be added. Body builders and those desiring to gain weight may use these liquids to bulk-up or increase weight.They are considered easier alternatives to solid foods that require more preparation and may be harder to consume.

Warning

According to the Mayo Clinic, certain liquid diets may help maintain adequate hydration and also provide some important minerals and perhaps energy. A clear liquid diet, however, does not offer adequate calories and nutrients and is therefore not advised for long-term use without medical supervision. Limiting this diet to only a few days is recommended.
