Methadone is a narcotic pain reliever which is used when there is no relief from severe pain by non-narcotic pain relievers. Besides being used as a pain reliever, it is also used as part of drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs. It is usually available as a tablet, as a dispensable tablet which can be dissolved in a liquid, as a liquid solution or as a concentrated solution in which the liquid has to be diluted before use. According to Medline Plus, besides being habit-forming, methadone can have side-effects which include drowsiness and dizziness; disturbances in sleep and sexual activity; or slowed breathing or irregular heartbeat.

Drowsiness and Dizziness

According to Medline Plus, drowsiness is one of the side-effects of methadone. The individual taking methadone may feel drowsy and weak which may affect the ability to think clearly and take quick actions. This is why Medline Plus suggests that individuals on methadone should not drive or operate heavy machinery. Intake of alcohol can add to the drowsiness associated with this medication. An individual may also experience dizziness while getting up too quickly from a lying position, especially when the medication is started. Weakness, headaches, nausea and vomiting may also be experienced.

Disturbances in Sleep and Sexual Activity

According to Medline Plus, methadone may cause sleep and sexual disturbances. Medline Plus says that an individual may experience difficulty in falling asleep. The person also finds it difficult to stay asleep and may wake up several times during the night. Decreased sexual desire is another side-effect of methadone. A person may also experience decreased sexual ability in the form of difficulty in erection. Woman may also miss their menstrual periods while taking this medication.

Slowed Breathing or Irregular Breathing

According to Medline Plus, methadone can also cause slowed breathing. An individual may experience difficulties in breathing. The breathing may become slow and shallow. Medline Plus says that methadone may also cause an individual's heartbeat to beat irregularly. The heart may beat too slowly or too fast. Pounding of the heart is another side-effect that some experience. An individual may also report feeling faint and confused. Pain in the stomach, difficulty in urination, constipation, weight gain and loss of appetite may also occur. Swelling in the hands, arms, feet and legs are also side-effects of methadone. A person may also experience mood changes and vision problems.
