Earwax may seem like a nuisance but it is actually the body's natural defense against foreign bodies in the ear canal. As wax builds up, it should fall out of the ear on its own, but occasionally it might harden and block the ear canal, leading to infections and hearing loss. Your first thought may be to use a cotton swab to remove it, but this method can push wax deeper into the ear canal and cause more damage. You must be particularly cautious when dealing with a baby's ears.
Step 1
Place one to three drops of baby oil or mineral oil in the baby's ear. This will soften the wax so it is easier to remove.
Step 2
Heat a washcloth in warm water. Make sure it is not too hot for your baby's skin.
Step 3
Place the washcloth against the baby's outer ear and gently massage the area to melt and break up the wax.
Step 4
Wrap the warm wash cloth around your index finger and wipe away the wax that is visible in the outer ear.
Step 5
Repeat these steps as needed for excessive buildup. Do not try to remove all of the wax from the baby's ears; this can lead to irritation and infection.
Tips and Warnings
- If this method does not work, you should see your pediatrician. Do not attempt to remove the wax with cotton swabs. Consult your pediatrician before you put any products in your baby's ear.
