The world is torn on public breastfeeding, according to La Leche League International. Some women believe it's their right to provide nourishment for their babies, but other mothers think breastfeeding is a private act. The public is also torn. Some believe women's right to breastfeed in public should be protected, and others think it's inappropriate. Many mothers strike the balance between modesty and their hungry baby's needs by using covers specifically designed for public breastfeeding.

Step 1

Use a small blanket to conceal your breastfeeding activities, recommends La Leche League International. This is perhaps one of the easiest and most convenient methods because you likely already have a blanket with you.

Step 2

Use a sling to carry your baby that allows you to transition to a natural breastfeeding position. Adjust a ring sling or wrap sling so that you strike the right balance between coverage and latch position.

Step 3

Try specific clothing designed for public breastfeeding. Certain types of shirts have wide flaps or adjustable capes that allow you to breastfeed in public.

Step 4

Use a breastfeeding cover device. These are part clothing, part blanket or drape. They have adjustable collars that go around your neck and long fabric bases that cover your baby and provide an airy, roomy environment for your baby to nurse.

Step 5

Wear loose clothing. With the right maneuvering, a jacket or buttoned up shirt can effectively conceal your breast as your baby feeds. Experiment with a few pieces of clothing at home to get a feel for the best fits. Pair with a nursing bra that easily unsnaps for quick access.

Things You'll Need
