Sebaceous glands that produce oil can become less active, resulting in drier skin. Skin can also become more fragile with age due to the decreased number of blood vessels. However, age is not the only reason to care for your skin. Good skin care can help avoid diseases such as skin cancer and outbreaks like contact dermatitis.
Sun Damage
Protecting your skin from the sun is part of good skin care. Ultraviolet light, the invisible and intense rays from the su, can damage skin and cause premature wrinkling, liver spots dry skin and potentially fatal conditions like malignant skin tumors. To protect yourself from the sun, avoid exposure to the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the most damaging rays can pose a danger, and apply a sunscreen that has an SPF value of 15 or more before engaging in outdoor activities. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, proper use of sunscreens can help prevent actinic keratoses (the earliest stages of certain skin cancers) even after extensive sun damage has occurred.

Good skin care also involves refraining form habits that can potentially damage the health of your body as well as your skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking accelerates aging of your skin, increasing wrinkles by causing the blood vessels to narrow and decreasing blood flow. This results in unhealthy skin that lacks oxygen and nutrients like vitamin A. Damage in collagen and the elastic fibers can cause the skin to lose elasticity and appear wrinkled.
Conditions
According to The American Academy of Dermatology, good skin care can reduce flare-ups of conditions such as atopic dermatitis ( a skin condition that is characterized by itchy, red, sensitive skin). Hydrating the skin and avoiding possible allergens such as soaps, cosmetics, jewelry and perfumes can keep your skin healthy and decrease the need for medication.
