Hypothyroidism is a condition that results in low levels of thyroid hormone in the body. The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and is responsible for producing thyroid hormone, which primarily control metabolism in the body. Causes of hypothyroidism include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, anti-thyroid medications, thyroid surgery and iodine deficiency. Hypothyroidism may be a difficult condition to detect because symptoms can be subtle and take place over a long period.

Cold Sensitivity

According to Medline Plus of the National Institutes of Health, you may experience sensitivity to cold weather in the early stages of hypothyroidism. This occurs because thyroid hormone is a metabolic hormone that increases metabolism, or energy use in the body. When energy is used appropriately, heat is produced. When energy isn't produced at adequate rates, you may begin to feel cold more often because of the lack of metabolic heat. This is a difficult symptom to notice. However, be suspicious of hypothyroidism if you're often feeling colder than usual without an environmental change in temperature.

Fatigue

If you have hypothyroidism, you may begin to feel more fatigued than usual, according to MayoClinic.com. Fatigue occurs because low thyroid hormone levels reduce the body’s metabolism, resulting in fatigue. This is a hidden symptom of hypothyroidism because there are many different possible causes of fatigue. In addition, you may likely drink more coffee or sleep longer to fight fatigue, and may not seek the necessary medical treatment. If you experience fatigue without a change in daily habits, seek medical treatment to have thyroid function assessed and treated.

Weight Gain

MayoClinic.com says weight gain is a common sign of hypothyroidism. You may notice that you have suddenly gained weight, or that you slowly gained weight over a long period without a change in exercise or dieting habits. Low thyroid hormone levels slow fat burn and energy use. This symptom may also be attributed to multiple factors, which can make a diagnosis of hypothyroidism difficult. See a doctor if you notice sudden or long-term weight gain.
