Basketball is a game of speed, athleticism and hand-eye coordination. Having these natural gifts will help the game come easier. However, skills like dribbling, shooting, rebounding and defense come from time and effort and the practice court. Drills can help you improve your all-around game and get more confident on the court.
Dribbling Skills
In order to dribble competently, players have to know how to dribble with both hands and keep their head up while they are doing it. In this drill, you will set up six cones past the midcourt line with each cone being five feet apart. Dribble to the right of the first cone with your right hand, to the left of the second cone with your left hand, the right of the third cone and continue in this manner until you reach the last cone. Return back to the dribbling line by returning in the same serpentine manner. Keep your head up throughout the drill.
Shooting Drill
Start off at the right baseline about 18 feet away. Take five shots from that spot and then move to the right elbow and take five shots from that spot. Move to the top of the key, the left elbow and the left baseline to take five shots from each of those spots. Do this drill before the start of practice every day and record how you do in a notebook. Note your progress on a daily basis.
Defensive Drill
In this drill, you will attempt to stop two teammates who are attempting to score. The point guard will come over halfcourt dribbling the ball with another teammate waiting near the basket. Those two must pass the ball three times to each other before attempting a shot. Your job is to force a turnover, defend the shot or get a rebound as a result of your defensive pressure and anticipation. A good defensive player should be able to be successful in this drill three times out of every 10 attempts. This drill requires a good anticipation of passes and shots and aggressive rebounding.
