From the top of Iron Mountain, visitors can look down upon the town of Glenwood Springs and see why its natural wonders make this Colorado town a year-round vacation destination. From nature lovers to extreme sport enthusiasts, Glenwood Springs visitors will have the time of their lives on land, air, water and snow.
Whitewater Rafting
The Travel Channel called Glenwood Springs “America’s hottest spot to cool off.” The Colorado River and Roaring Forks River make Glenwood Springs a rafting haven for any whitewater lover. Calm floats on Level I and II rapids are ideal for families that want a relaxing trip with the kids, while roaring Level III and IV rapids await the daredevil paddling enthusiasts. Numerous outfitters are available in the area that can be booked at local resorts in the region.
Relax in Healing Waters
The ancient Ute Indians discovered the mineral rich hot springs thousands of years ago that have been the source of legends of healing powers. Those very hot springs are Glenwood Springs’ top attraction. The Glenwood Hot Springs resort has the world’s largest hot springs pool, with 1 million-plus gallons of 90 degree water. The pool is open to the public for a modest fee, depending on the time of day.
Hike to Hanging Lake
Nestled among the walls of Glenwood Canyon, a popular two-mile round trip hike to Hanging Lake is a breathtaking adventure. The relatively easy hike will take you to a view of Hanging Lake and the cascading waterfalls that are the source of the glacial blue water. Once you have caught your breath and enjoyed the view, go the extra few hundred yards for a glimpse of Spouting Rock, where a waterfall spouts straight out of a sheer cliff.
Doc Holliday's Grave
One of America’s most famous gunslingers is laid to rest in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Made famous by his friendship with Wyatt Earp and the Shootout at the OK Corral, Doc Holliday is an icon of the Old West. A short hike from the trailhead at the corner of 12th Street and Bennett Avenue will take you to the old west cemetery. The trail is unkempt and uphill, but will provide visitors a sense of the Old West spirit that lives on in the Colorado Rockies.
Go Spelunking
You will walk and crawl through the Glenwood Caverns and Fairy Caves with a cavern adventure tour at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. Take this opportunity to view an environment that is millions of years in the making. Learn the difference between stalactites and stalagmites. Find out what soda straws and cave bacon are. The tour includes lighted helmets, gloves, knee pads, and elbow pads. You must be 10 years old or older for the tour. The trip takes about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish, where you will take the tram back down the mountain
