When you age, it is natural for the skin to go through changes. According to the Cleveland Clinic, as you get older, the skin loses its elasticity, thins out and becomes slack. Lifestyle choices, such as sun exposure and smoking, affect how quickly your skin starts to show signs of aging. To reverse signs of aging, you can make lifestyle changes as well as speak to a dermatologist about correcting wrinkles and sun damage on the skin.
Step 1
Wear sunscreen while outdoors. The sun exposes the skin to harmful UV radiation. Skin changes that can occur due to sun exposure include age spots, wrinkles and roughness. Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. Choose water resistant versions as well.
Step 2
Stop smoking. Smoking decreases blood flow to the skin and results in premature wrinkles. Heavy smokers have an increased tendency to have leathery and wrinkly skin. By quitting the habit, you improve the tone and texture of the skin.
Step 3
Treat the skin with topical retinoids. Topical retinoids are derived from vitamin A and are used to reverse the signs of aging by unclogging pores and boosting collagen production. Retinoids are available through a prescription, and when used on a long-term basis, they can get rid of age spots and fine lines.
Step 4
Give yourself a light chemical peel at home. These superficial peels remove the top layers of damaged skin to give you a younger appearance. Deeper chemical peels are available through a dermatologist.
Step 5
Undergo treatments through a dermatologist to reverse the signs of aging. Available treatments to combat aging skin include microdermabrasion, fillers and laser therapy. During microdermabrasion, your skin is covered with crystals. The crystals are then vacuumed off to remove dead skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. Fillers involve injecting a substance such as collagen into the skin to plump up the area and get rid of wrinkles. If you opt for laser therapy, a concentrated laser removes the top layers of skin to promote new growth.
