Allergic reactions, generically referred to as allergies, are biological responses to allergens such as dust, pollen or pet hair. Severe allergies may require a certain course of treatment however nasal lavage is a process that can be done at home to treat allergies and lessen the severity of symptoms, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 1

Purchase a nasal lavage kit from a local pharmacy. The neti pot is an example of a nasal lavage kit. Nasal lavage kits typically include a spouted pot with a powdered saline solution. Nasal lavage is the process of rinsing out the nasal passages by introducing water into each nostril and allowing it to run out through the nasal passages, thereby removing the irritants that are triggering allergy symptoms. Nasal lavage kits are effective in treating the areas of the body affected by the allergens. Most allergy medications are designed to treat the symptoms that result from allergies.

Step 2

Fill the pot with lukewarm—not hot—water. Mix in the powdered solution, if provided, into the water. One pot of water is typically used for each nostril. Tilt the head approximately 45 degrees to the right. Insert the pot’s spout into the left nostril and slowly pour the water into the nostril. Some patients feel a drowning sensation; however, this process is considered safe. Patients should remain calm and breathe through the mouth and avoid swallowing to prevent consuming water that is flowing out.

Step 3

Tilt head to the side until the pot is completely empty. It may be necessary to slightly elevate the pot to empty all of the water into the nostrils. Keep the head tilted to the appropriate side until all water flows out. Refill the pot and repeat this process on the opposite side.

Step 4

Hold the bridge of the nose, the bone in the nose between the eyes, and gently blow the nose to remove any excess water. It is typical to feel a sensation of the ears being clogged as small amount of water may travel to the ear canals.

Step 5

Use a saline solution or saline spray. Nasal lavage with a neti pot should be performed at home and can be limiting if allergy symptoms occur away from home. Keeping the nasal passages moistened with a saline solution helps to prevent irritants from attaching themselves to the membranes within the passages. Saline solution is typically sprayed or misted into the nostrils as needed, especially before or after being exposed to allergens.
