How to Clean Camping Tents

When packing for a camping trip, the tent is one of the most important things that you’ll bring. The tent serves as the only barrier between you and the wilderness so it’s important that it’s kept in the best condition possible. By cleaning it at home, you will also be afforded the opportunity to visually inspect it for tears and mold or mildew, which is much better discovered at home where you are better equipped to fix and clean it.

Step 1

Sweep the tent off with a broom to remove any loose dirt and debris.

Step 2

Clean away mold or mildew, if any is detected, with a solution of equal parts bleach and water. Use a soft bristle brush to remove it from the tent and wash the affected area with the solution to remove hidden spores and keep it from coming back.

Step 3

Wash the tent with warm soapy water and a mild soap. Avoid using detergents as this will leave a residue on the tent after it dries. Use a clean cloth or sponge to thoroughly scour every inch of the tent. As you’re washing the tent make it a point to look for holes and rips you may not have noticed before.

Step 4

Rinse the tent thoroughly with clean water to remove all of the soapy water residual. Any soap that dries on the tent may leave a sticky residue so be sure to rinse the tent well.

Step 5

Set the tent in a cool dry place until it is completely dry. If you plan on drying the tent outside, keep it out of direct sunlight. If you are going to dry it in a covered area such as the garage it may be helpful to use a dehumidifier to help dry it out.

Tips and Warnings

  • To help make the cleaning process easier, it helps to clean off any tree sap or bird droppings as soon as you see them. These things are difficult to clean up later.
  • Do not store the tent until it is completely dry; moisture can promote the growth of mold and mildew. Avoid using harsh chemicals and abrasives that may damage the tent.
