Cetirizine is a generic form of the medication Zyrtec used to treat allergies. Cetirizine is available as an over-the-counter medication with no prescription required. Few side effects have been reported with cetirizine, but any experienced that worsen or persist should be discussed with a physician or pharmacist.

Drowsiness

Cetirizine commonly produces drowsiness as a side effect, according to Drugs.com. This is usually mild and dissipates with continued use. People using this medication should avoid driving or any activity which requires alertness until they are accustomed to the effects of this medication.

Fatigue

Cetirizine can produce fatigue or a feeling of tiredness, according to Drugs.com. Again, this side effect usually ceases after the medication is taken for a couple of weeks. If this side effect does not go away or is bothersome, a call to the physician or pharmacist is warranted as another medication may be recommended.

Dry Mouth

Some people report dry mouth as a side effect after taking cetirizine, according to MedlinePlus. People who experience this side effect may feel thirsty. Chewing sugar-free gum may help with this side effect until the body becomes adjusted to the new medication.

Gastrointestinal Upsets

Several gastrointestinal upsets may occur with the use of cetirizine, according to PubMed Health. Most people do not experience this side effect, however. Nausea may be present with or without vomiting. Some people may experience stomach pain, and some may experience diarrhea. When these side effects are present, they usually resolve after the first few days of use, but should be reported to a physician or pharmacist if they are severe or prolonged.
