If you do not have at least one bowel movement daily, you might consider one of several ways to cleanse the colon. Some people state that they may have only two bowel movements per week and experience irregularity. Eating a high-fiber diet, juicing, fasting or consuming certain herbal teas all are ways that can clear the bowel. Check with your physician or other medical professional for guidance.

Juicing

Drinking only juice for one to several days is one way to clear waste from the colon. Elson Haas, M.D., author of "The New Detox Diet," encourages people to juice organic whole fruits and vegetables as well as drink plain water throughout the day and to rest more that usual. The idea is that the internal organs of digestion will rest during a juice fast and enable the colon to release waste.

The Master Cleanse

The "master cleanse" was designed by Stanley Burroughs and is described in the booklet he published in the 1970s. The master cleanse is a lemonade made from organic lemons, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water. According to Burroughs, following this cleanse until the tongue appears pink and free of any white coating is the sign that the colon has been cleansed.

Herbal Cleanse

Carrie L’Esperance, author of "The New Seasonal Detox Diet," advises readers interested in cleansing the colon to consume certain herbal teas such as buckthorn, senna or cascara sagrada. Not everyone can tolerate these herbs, she cautions. Today many commercial “detox teas” have been formulated to clear the colon. Ask your physician which herbal teas are appropriate for you to use.
