In addition to eliminating the possibility of comfortably wearing sandals, having dry skin on your feet can also be quite painful. As the skin breaks apart, it opens up and allows easy access for bacteria that can cause infections and make the problem much worse. Whether it’s the result of sudden dry weather or a medical condition, dry, cracked feet is an issue that isn’t easily ignored. Fortunately, several things can be done to help remedy this painful problem.
Step 1
Rub over thick patches of dry skin with a pumice stone gently. Remove as much excess dead skin cells as possible, but stop immediately if you experience any pain from removing too much.
Step 2
Bathe daily, but no more than that as this can cause your skin to dry out further. Use warm water--not hot--and wash your feet with a mild moisturizing soap. Gently pat your feet dry with a soft clean dry towel to avoid irritating them.
Step 3
Moisturize your feet within a few minutes of drying them off with a scent and alcohol-free oil-based moisturizing lotion. Apply moisturizers to your feet at least three times per day and right before you go to bed. Be sure to cover your feet with soft clean cotton socks to help keep the moisturizer in, rather than get it all over your bedding.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water throughout the day, at least six to eight glasses, to help keep your body hydrated. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these tend to dehydrate the body. Add foods to your daily diet that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and fresh fruits and vegetables that contain vitamins A, B and C. Avoid processed foods and excessive sugars.
Step 5
Place a humidifier in your bedroom at night while you sleep to help keep the air from becoming too dry, which can counter your efforts in battling dry skin.
