We all can be a little hard on ourselves from time to time. However, we have just as many positive qualities as negative qualities. Changing your thinking about yourself is the basis for building up self-esteem.
Step 1
Think positively about practically everything. Everything may not go well all the time, but having positive outlook on what did go well will help you to start thinking differently.
Step 2
Make a list of your positive qualities. Read the list on a regular basis to remind yourself how valuable you are.
Step 3
Forbid yourself to think negatively about yourself. Acknowledge that you may have some less than perfect attributes however do not make that the focus of your thinking.
Step 4
Consider taking a class on assertiveness training. Assertiveness training teaches you to how to stand up for yourself and communicate your needs in an effective, not passive or aggressive way (see Resources for sample course overview and curriculum).
Step 5
Seek help if you need it. Consider finding a support group of people with similar challenges to engage with in a positive environment.
