Red bumps that appear after shaving are caused by ingrown hairs that fail to break through the skin. When a hair becomes trapped under the skin’s surface, it continues to grow underneath the skin, causing inflammation and pain. Ingrown hairs can sometimes lead to infection. According to the Mayo Clinic, ingrown hairs are common in areas where hair is curly, making them a common problem in the bikini area.

Step 1

Wet the area with warm water in the bath or shower to help soften the skin. You can also apply a warm, wet washcloth and leave it in place for a few minutes, notes “Cosmopolitan” magazine. Avoid dry shaving, which can contribute to ingrown hairs.

Step 2

Apply a shaving cream or lotion to help protect the skin.

Step 3

Use a sharp, single-blade razor. According to the Mayo Clinic, double-edged razors pull the hair out slightly before cutting it, allowing the hair to retreat back into the skin. Although this may provide for a closer shave, it increases the risk of hair becoming trapped underneath the skin as it grows back.

Step 4

Avoid pulling the skin taut, which will also allow hairs to withdraw into the skin, notes the Mayo Clinic. However, it may be necessary to pull some areas taut with your free hand to prevent nicks.

Step 5

Shave in the direction of hair growth. Shaving in the opposite direction can leave hair with a blunt edge, making it more prone to grow back into the skin.

Step 6

Apply a cool compress to the area when finished.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you do experience ingrown hairs, avoid picking at them, which could lead to infection. Exfoliate the area gently with a washcloth or exfoliating cleanser. “Fitness” magazine recommends applying a moisturizer with lactic acid to help soften the area and allow hairs to grow in more easily.
