Dry, thinning hair can be hard to manage and it may seem like there’s no treatment available to make your hair healthy again. According to Women's Healthcare Topics, dry hair can actually cause hair damage which is very likely why you may be suffering from hair thinning. There are a number of things can cause dry hair such as the sun, wind, water, heated styling tools and chemical treatments.

Shampoo

Moisturizing shampoo is the best type of shampoo to use for dry hair, according to DermNet NZ. Moisturizing shampoos work differently than ordinary shampoos. They use proteins which fuse split ends back together, which helps reinforce the end of your hair shaft. Another added benefit of using a moisturizing shampoo is that it will pull moisture back into your scalp and hair. Avoid shampoos which contain lauryl sulfate and 2-in-1 shampoos and conditioners. According to DermNet NZ, these products can dry out your hair even more.

Conditioner

Women's Healthcare Topics states that using a conditioner is key to eliminating dry hair. Since water can contribute to dry hair, Women's Healthcare Topics recommends that you towel dry your hair before applying conditioner to remove excess moisture which will only cause more dryness when it evaporates from your hair. Once you have towel dried your hair, work the conditioner into your scalp all the way down the the tips of your hair. In winter months, your hair requires a bit more conditioning. Women's Healthcare Topics recommends conditioning your hair for one to two minutes in the summer and three or more minutes in the winter. You can comb the conditioner through your hair to ensure adequate coverage throughout your hair shafts. Use a conditioner which contains humectants, as they help protect your hair and lock in moisture. Use cool or warm water to rinse your hair. Hot water may cause more drying.

Oil Treatments

Women's Health Care Topics recommends hot oil treatments for dry hair. You can visit your local salon or purchase hot oil treatments over the counter at drug stores, pharmacies and retail stores. Alternatively, you can create your own home treatment. For an at-home treatment, massage 2 tbsp. of warm almond oil or olive oil into your scalp and hair. After you've massaged the warm oil into your hair and scalp, wrap your hair in a warm, damp towel. Allow the warm oil to penetrate your hair for 30 minutes before shampooing it out. You may also use an aromatherapy approach by mixing six drops each of lavender oil, bay oil and sandalwood oil and 6 oz. of warm sesame oil. After you have mixed the oils, apply them to your hair and wrap a towel around your hair for at least 15 minutes prior to shampooing.
