Removing the hair from your pubic area gives a clean line for swimsuits. Unfortunately, many of the methods of pubic hair removal can be painful, like waxing or plucking. Shaving can be a pain-free way to get rid of pubic hair, but if done incorrectly, it can lead to stubble and ingrown hairs. By preparing your skin properly before you shave, you can get a close smooth shave that leaves you with hair-free skin in a pain-free, quick and easy way.

Step 1

Trim the hair on your pubic area so it's no longer than 1/8 to 1/2 inch. The longer your hair is, the more your razor will pull and drag on the hair, resulting in red bumps and irritation. By trimming carefully with a pair of manicure scissors, the hair becomes more manageable and easy to shave.

Step 2

Apply a warm compress to the area using a warm, wet washcloth held over the area for at least two minutes. The warmth helps to open pores so it's easier to shave. It also helps to soften the hair so it cuts more easily. You can also shave at the end of the shower, since your hair will already be warm and wet, and skip the compress.

Step 3

Choose a brand-new razor with the sharpest blades, suggests "Cosmopolitan" magazine. Sharp blades ensure a clean cut with less drag. When you use a dull razor, you put yourself at risk for ingrown hairs due to pulling, tugging and breaking the hairs. Apply a good-quality shave gel to cushion your skin against razor burn; shaving essentially removes the top layer of skin. If you only use soap, you may not have enough protection against burn.

Step 4

Pull the skin on your pubic area taut with one hand as you work the razor with your other hand, recommends "Marie Claire" magazine. Instead of shaving against the direction of hair growth, which can result in ingrown hairs as you force the hairs in the wrong direction, shave with the hair growth. It will help you avoid irritation and bumps following the shave.

Step 5

Rinse away the shave gel when you're finished, and pat dry. Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to ward away red bumps and itchiness due to irritation, suggests Dr. Allison Vidimos, a staff dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. If possible, wear loose fitting clothes for the next couple of hours; tight underwear, swimsuits or pants could exacerbate irritation and make your skin look raw and bumpy.
