Upstate New York is one of the most picturesque regions of the United States. From rolling hillsides to untouched forests, upstate New York provides a most serene getaway for families. Season to season, natural wonderlands exist for children to explore. From the thunder of the powerful Niagara River to the high peaks of the Adirondacks, children will never forget the natural beauty mixed with some of the most interesting history of our nation.

Niagara Falls

The mighty Niagara River pours over 3 billion gallons of water each day over the falls. Children will be mesmerized at the power behind the rushing waters and can experience a spectacular beneath-the-falls view onboard "The Maid of the Mist." This guided boat tour glides along the Niagara River to the basin of the Falls. The Cave of the Winds is a walking tour just below the falls. At night, a beautiful light show displays the falls in gorgeous multicolor hues. A trip to Niagara is surely to be one of their most unforgettable memories.

Lake Placid

Home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, this classic mountain village offers not only scenic beauty but also fantastic Olympic museums to visit. Kids will love visiting Whiteface Mountain and traveling up the ski lift to the top, viewing the gorgeous peaks below and, from afar, the Green Mountains of Vermont. Enjoy plenty of trendy boutiques, ice cream shops and fine eateries while walking throughout this most splendid town.

Cooperstown

Home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Cooperstown is a must-see for the avid young baseball fan. Cooperstown is located 85 miles south of Syracuse and at the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. Rolling hills surround this classic small town, and kids will marvel at the magnificent display of baseball memorabilia at the museum. Beautiful parks surround the lakefront, providing a wonderful place for families to picnic or take an after-dinner stroll.

The Finger Lakes

Formed by glaciers, the Finger Lakes region, located between Rochester and Syracuse, provides a natural haven for lakeside fun and some of the best fishing in the country. Over 80 various trails are available for families to bike or hike throughout this spectacular, all-natural region. Enjoy gorgeous lake views from the hamlets and small towns surrounding each lake. Watkins Glen, at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, offers awesome caverns and fascinating gorges to explore. Kids can experience Amish life by exploring the areas between Seneca and Keuka Lakes, in Yates County. While traveling throughout this region, children will see immaculately preserved Amish farms and roads traveled by farmers in horse-drawn wagons. Fresh homegrown produce and homemade preserves made by the Amish can be purchased at various farmers markets and festivals in the many towns and villages of the Finger Lakes. A visit to this most fascinating region of the state will intrigue even the youngest visitor.

Corning Glass Museum

Located 14 miles north of the city of Elmira, Corning is home to the largest glass museum in the world. Kids will be enthralled with the live glassblowing demonstrations and interactive activities such as the "make your own glass experience." This museum showcases 35 centuries of glass artistry. A research library highlighting records of glass and glass-making is also on-site. The Studio is an internationally renowned glass-making school with various courses taught by talented artists from around the world. Kids 19 and under are free.
