The role of a mother is one of the most important jobs in the world. Mothers can nurture and provide for their children because of a special love that they possess. While every person has a mother somewhere, not everyone takes on the job of motherhood, and those who choose to be mothers are to be honored and celebrated for the work they do.
Significance
Mothers have had a significant role throughout history as caretakers of children and the glue that binds families together. Mothers have shaped and built connections for family members by sharing stories and imparting wisdom, states The Legacy Project. Over time, mothering has evolved from traditional roles and now includes those that stay home to care for children, single mothers, working moms and foster mothers. Motherhood is a role that employs women from all backgrounds.
Tasks
Motherhood can be a thankless job, requiring many hours of work. Mothers help with homework; drive children to different activities, give baths, hugs and good-night kisses; provide support and advice; and give first aid when needed. Mothers typically can multitask and accomplish several projects at once. A mother does not always receive words of thanks for her efforts, but she is rewarded with an unsolicited kiss from a child, a special picture scrawled just for her, or sincere and upright behavior from a teen that she has worked to teach.
Pregnancy
One aspect of motherhood and maternity is carrying a child through pregnancy. A pregnancy may be considered one of the earliest acts of parenting a child. Pregnancy is an early form of nurturing, especially when a mother takes good care of herself. A mother who follows a healthy diet, who considers the impact of stress on her unborn child and who obtains thorough prenatal care is taking care of herself and her baby. These practices not only protect her health, but provide the best start for a baby.
Paths to Motherhood
Maternity is not just reserved for mothers that have given birth to a child. Some are mothers to adopted children, raising a son or daughter who has a different birthmother. Some women are step-mothers, who help to raise a child of a spouse. Some are grandmothers who care for or raise their grandchildren full-time. A mother may have given birth to a baby and is allowing another family to raise her child. There is not one single path to motherhood that is superior to others.
Best for the Child
The biggest effort of motherhood and maternity is working toward the best interest of the child. A mother looks out for a child’s well-being, and teaching and rearing children is sometimes a matter of trial and error. Mothers may learn just as much through parenting as their children do. Maternity is a chance to be stretched and pushed to the limits physically, emotionally and spiritually. Many mothers feel that they love their children more than they love themselves. A woman who takes on motherhood is promoting the best for her child, sometimes at her own expense.
