Volleyball drills should teach the fundamental skills of the game in a competitive and fun environment. Intense volleyball drills for girls have an added advantage of moving at a fast pace and keeping players mentally focused. Such drills can increase physical fitness due to their demanding nature or simulate the pressure a volleyball player will experience in a game situation.
Team Passing Drill
This drill improves passing and setting while also including an element of physical fitness training. The drill is performed by two players. Player A begins at the volleyball net in a setter’s position. Player B begins in the back left corner of the volleyball court. The coach tosses the ball in the air to Player B, who must pass the ball accurately to Player A. Player A catches the pass and throws the ball back to the coach before sprinting to switch positions with Player B. The ball is then tossed to Player A, who passes to Player B, and the process is repeated.
Repeat the cycle 10 to 20 times, and encourage players to sprint by quickly feeding the ball between repetitions. When the drill is completed, repeat the same cycle with Player B beginning the drill in the back right corner of the volleyball court.
The goal of this intense volleyball drill is to develop a player’s ability to successfully pass to a target and under pressure and while tired.
Block After Block and Sprint
This drill develops blocking ability and increases physical fitness through the repeated jumps and sprints required to successfully perform the drill. Two lines of volleyball players should begin this drill, with two to four players in each line. Four players are stationed on the opposite side of the volleyball net and throw a ball up to themselves before spiking it over the net.
Line A is stationed on the left sideline of the volleyball court. The first player runs to the net and blocks a shot from directly in front. The player then sidesteps along the net before blocking a more central spike. After the second block, the player joins the back of Line B. This process is repeated the other way around by Line B. The drill continues for five to 10 minutes and develops footwork, blocking and physical fitness.
No Fear Defense
The coach stands at the net with four defensive players lined up at the 10-foot line on the opposite side of the net. The coach continuously spikes balls at each defender in order, with the defender aiming to keep the ball off the ground with a dig or pass. After a defender successfully deals with five balls, she can exit the drill by passing the ball up to herself and catching it. The drill continues until one defender is left standing and is declared the loser. She then replaces the coach as ball server, and the drill continues.
