In a standard golf bag, the majority of the clubs will be irons. The average golfer uses irons instead of fairway woods when they need more control and do not have to hit the ball as far. Most players have between seven and 11 irons in their bags, all of which have different lofts. The higher the number of the iron, the greater the loft and the shorter the distance for which you will most often use that iron.

"Golf Digest" rates irons each year in its annual Hot List. In 2010, the Adams Idea A7 series, the Callaway Diablo Forged series and the Ping G15 series received the magazine's highest rating, the gold medal.

Adams Idea A7 series

The Adams Idea A7 series includes two hybrids, the 5- through 9-irons, plus a pitching wedge. This iron series received a five-out-of-five rating from "Golf Digest" in the Look/Sound/Feel category, as well as 4 1/2 out of five stars for performance. This iron set is priced around $500 as of the summer of 2010.

Callaway Diablo Forged series

One of the priciest iron series, retailing for around $1,000 as of 2010, the Callaway Diablo Forged received the highest rating for performance from "Golf Digest," at a perfect five stars. The set includes a standard 3-iron through pitching wedge, and the construction features a light club head and a low center of gravity to help prevent errant shots.

Ping G15 series

The Ping G15 series also runs from the standard 3-iron through pitching wedge, and features a wider sole than almost any other iron series. This sole allows for more consistent ball-striking, and the slightly lower lofts provide more distance. The Ping G15 series sells for about $700 as of July 2010.
