Trampolines provide an exercise outlet as well as fun for the family. As entertaining as this equipment is, there are many safety considerations as well. Constant use, ultraviolet rays and liquids can wear down a trampoline, rendering it unsafe for use. Once a rip or tear occurs, it gets worse with every jump, so fix problem areas as quickly as possible.

Step 1

Inspect your trampoline mat frequently. When you notice small tears, holes or any other signs of slight wear and tear, cover the area with duct tape. This is useful for minor problems only; once they get larger, more extensive work must be done to ensure safety.

Step 2

Measure the size of the tear. Determine if you are able to patch the tear or if a new mat is necessary. If a tear is larger than 1 or 2 inches, do not try to fix it. You will need to get a new mat.

Step 3

Remove the trampoline mat if you can patch a hole or tear. It must be accessible to your sewing machine. Place a patch from your manufacturer's patch kit over the hole you want to repair. Sew all the way around the edges of the patch.

Step 4

Study the instructions that came with your patch kit. They will tell you what type of stitching you need for the weave of your mat. Stitch around the patch multiple times to ensure that the new patch is strong enough to withstand use.

Step 5

Cut off excess material that remains from the patch, and place the mat back on your trampoline frame.
