Heavy-bag training is a staple conditioning and power development tool for boxers and martial artists. Ranging in weight from 40 to 150 pounds, heavy bags can be attached to specially designed metal stands--or, better yet, hung from the ceiling. Hanging a heavy bag from the ceiling allows the user 360-degree access to work a full range of kicks and punches.
How to Hang a Heavy Bag from the Ceiling
Step 1
Identify the area where you want to hang the heavy bag from the ceiling. Make sure you have at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides of the bag. Use the 1/4-inch drill bit to drill a small pilot hole in the ceiling where you want to hang the bag.
Step 2
Climb into the space above the ceiling, and locate the pilot hole. Place one oak board across the ceiling joists adjacent to the pilot hole. Secure it to each joist with two 3-inch wood screws on each side.
Step 3
Place the second oak board on top of the first board, securing it with the remaining four wood screws. This is the platform to which the heavy bag will be mounted.
Step 4
Drill a hole, using the 5/16-inch bit, from the ceiling pilot hole into the platform.
Step 5
Screw the 3/8-inch eye bolt or heavy-bag ring into the wood platform.
Step 6
Attach the S-hook to the eye-bolt ring.
Step 7
Hang the heavy-bag chain on the S-hook. If you need to lower the bag, hang one end of the 5/16-inch chain on the S-hook and the heavy-bag chain on the other end.
Tips and Warnings
- Mounting the heavy bag to a platform spreads the stress across the ceiling joists. If the platform begins to crack or show other signs of wear, you simply have to replace the platform without risking damage to the ceiling joists.
- Drywall or plaster alone will not support a heavy bag's weight. You must hang it from a ceiling joist or mounting platform attached to more than one ceiling joist.
