The main focus of Ayurveda is balancing the body in a mental and physical way. This involves several components, including a focus on massage, yoga and the use of traditional indigenous Indian herbs. The use of the Ayurvedic system as a whole is meant to promote digestion and balance in the body for increased longevity. Many of these herbs are grown in the southern regions of India, particularly the region known as Kerala.
Turmeric
Although turmeric is used in kitchens throughout India for its flavor, it is also widely used in Ayurvedic medicine. It can treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, including toothache, ulcers, jaundice and hemorrhage. Because senna leaf is a powerful laxative, it's not a good idea to use it on a daily basis for long periods of time. This could cause the body's digestive system to become reliant on it. However, to cleanse the digestive system from time to time through the enhanced elimination of waste, this is an effective herbal remedy according to practitioners of Ayurveda.
Fennel
The essential oils that can be derived from fennel are used in a variety of Ayurvedic products and treatments. The main benefit of fennel is that it helps cut down on intestinal gas, bloating and other stomach discomfort. Fennel contains aspartic acid, which helps stimulate the secretion of digestive juices, helping ease indigestion. That is why it's common to chew on fennel seeds after a meal in India. It is also rich in antioxidants and is a diuretic. That means that when used in cooking, it can help stimulate the elimination of toxins from the body.
Licorice Root
The health benefits of licorice have made it a popular herbal remedy throughout the world. When used in Ayurveda, licorice is specifically thought to relieve inflamed joints, eye disorders and constipation. Licorice tea is slowly sipped after meals to aid digestion and help balance the body's circulatory system.
